10 ESSENTIAL POINTERS FOR FIRST TIME ROVERS
Being a first time Rover can be daunting. It is usually accompanied with uncertain answers to the “what,” “how” and “where” questions.
Okay, Okay…The word is new to you, Let me explain.
Rover: A person who spends their time travelling from place to place.
To Rove: To travel constantly without a fixed destination.
For every traveller, the experiences are different and unique in their own way. That's why we've compiled these pointers to help you travel with confidence.
Come Along!
- Invest in top quality equipments
When roving for the first time, make sure to pay attention to the kind of items you'll be carrying along. Ensure to get a good trunk that can withstand the hauling and dragging as well as comfortable footwear. You don't want the handle of your suitcase breaking at the airport, or the sole of shoes pulling out during your journey.
- Plan your budget carefully
Ensure to make a list of the necessary expenses for your trip and affix the amount of money required for each item. Also, to be on the safe side, double the amount of each expense in case of an unexpected inflation.
- Familiarise yourself with the destination
Before embarking on a journey, read up on the way of life and culture of wherever you are headed. Take into cognisance what kind of clothing they wear, their delicacies, their tipping culture, as well as popular scams first timers fall prey to. Don’t travel to a place you are ignorant about.
- Pack Light.
As a first-timer, endeavour to travel with your essentials only. Do a test-run with a light suitcase for your first trip to familiarise yourself with the amount of weight you'll be needing on subsequent travels. Best believe you don't need those 5 pairs of heels you're about to shove into your suitcase.
- Have copies of important documents
This cannot be over emphasised enough. For all of your travel documents, make sure you scan and upload a digital copy on your drive and make hard copies as well. This would give you peace of mind in case you lose the original copies or they get stolen.
- Wear your bulky clothing while travelling
To stay in check of the acceptable baggage allowance, wear your bulky clothes on your journey. This will also help to create more room in your suitcase for other important things.
- Carry a battery pack
It will save you the stress of a dead battery in a new city. Especially when you aren't familiar with the area and you rely on GPS for navigations. Remember, a phone with a dead battery cannot aid communication and you might be left stranded.
- Hide your money in multiple spots
Never store all your money in the same place. Keep some in your bag, some in your pocket, and leave some back at your hotel. So, in a case of theft or misplacing money, you will have something to fall back on.
- Talk to the locals
The locals are the best source of information. They can tell you what parts of the city are safe and share exciting experiences for you to explore. The locals are the best bet to give you an insight on the culture of the city and provide you with more gems than what you will get from reading a travel guide.
- Check in with family and friends
Share your itinerary with a couple of family members and close friends. Also make a habit of checking in with them at your preferred time of the day, to update them on your location and the happenings around you. Having someone who is aware of your travel journey is very important in case things go wrong.
We hope these suggestions were helpful to you. Roving can be challenging at first, but it gets easier with practice. Along the way, don't forget to learn some of your own techniques.
And if you're planning to explore, make sure you do it THE ROVERS WAY!
