During this period, the streets are filled with enchanting decorations, melodious christmas songs from the choir, the jingle of bells, laughter of the children and joy of the old.
Visitors from different countries troop in to participate in the Christmas market in a bid to enjoy the enticing discounts available during this period and be serenaded in the beautiful culture.
It is a street market that combines the charm of tradition with the excitement of an open-air market place
How Did It Start?
The Christmas market began in the late Middle Ages in Germany. The inception is said to be Vienna's Dezembermarkt (December Market), dating back to around 1296. Emperor Albrecht I granted shopkeepers the rights to hold a market for a day or two in early winter so that townspeople could stock up on supplies to last them through the cold months.
It was the Winter markets that eventually gave way to what is now known as the Christmas Markets. The earliest of which are claimed to have happened in Munich in around 1310, Bautzen in 1384, and Frankfurt in 1393.
However, Dresden’s Striezelmarkt is considered the first real Christmas Market, dating from 1434.
Other places that have adopted the Christmas market culture include:
England
Hungary
Switzerland
France
Austria
Romania
Portugal
Belgium
Italy
Scotland
Estonia
Czech republic
Spain
When does it start?
The Christmas market usually covers the Advent period and runs up till a day or two before christmas. It often begins mid November, but the duration varies in different countries and cities. Smaller cities may begin late and end early while the bigger cities operate the Christmas market for a longer period of time.
